On a recent trip to Scotland, one of the intrepid Unmissable team members discovered what has often been described as the ‘most bizarre building in Scotland.’ You wouldn’t expect to see a giant pineapple in the lowlands of Scotland and you certainly wouldn’t expect to be able to stay there. But that’s exactly what we found in Dunmore, less than an hour from Edinburgh. This summer house built in 1761 has a first floor built in the shape of a realistic, prickly pineapple which is 45 feet high. No one is quite sure who the architect is, but it is thought to have been the work of Sir William Chambers who designed numerous distinctive buildings in London’s Kew Gardens. The Pineapple began life as the brainchild of the 4th Earl of Dunmore, John Murray. A folly for his wife, the Pineapple was created to sit atop a pavilion, in which she could sit and admire her garden. All that’s missing is the pina colada to create that totally tropical feeling!
